We go primarily by the event attendees list rather than confirmations, and don't usually cancel somebody's space for failing to re-confirm, just because some people don't have forum email notifications turned on etc.
Asking confirmations is still very useful as for example this week it reminded some people to withdraw and created space for late registrations.

Hi there. I’ve been trying to join this session but the event is showing as full. However, it looks like 21 people have confirmed attendance. Does that mean there are three free slots and I can turn up this morning?
