Good weekend cycle route suggestions

Posted on
  • I am an experienced road biker my friend has just got his new road bike a beginner. we are thinking of doing a weekend cycle leave saturday return sunday. anyone suggest a good and easy route ? looking forward to hopefully hear some suggestions. cheers :-)

  • Are you talking about getting a train out somewhere or riding out from London?

  • I spent the last long weekend in Suffolk, based in a b&b near Sudbury. Suffolk is great cycling country, pretty flat, you can find lots of quiet roads, lots of pretty villages (Lavenham is a must for a cake stop) and the Dedham vale area of outstanding natural beauty.

You could catch the train to Sudbury (assuming no rail replacements) and head north out of there towards Acton and Lavenham and then do some sort of loop to the East (e.g. https://www.strava.com/activities/964959505), and then on day 2 could do loop northwards towards Bury St Edmunds with stop at Maglia Rossa cycle cafe. Can easily cycle to Cambridge too, very nice route we took on the way back, hardly any cars on the roads: https://www.strava.com/activities/966381571

  • PS if your friend is a beginner I highly recommend catching train out of London, it is just so much more relaxing. Nothing like cycling up the A1000 to put someone off cycling for life!

Last Sunday caught train to Baldock from Finsbury Park and did this lovely loop: https://www.strava.com/activities/975617444

  • hi we were thinking of cycling out from london

  • Great suggestions Diane thank you !!!

  • For anyone that missed out on the RideLondon 100, I've tweaked and rerouted the course so it doesn't go up any one way streets and also to start/finish at Regent's Park.

  • Great idea, thank you @MikeMC for this, would make a great August Bank Holiday ride. hmmm now am I free then..?

  • Hi there, wasn't sure where to post this but I am heading down to the New Forest for a night over the bank holiday weekend and am looking for a nice cycle route suggestion to do with my wife. If anyone has one handy, would love to hear from them. Thanks
