You're welcome to join on Sunday @Jmc
-
Would you be comfortable with a 50 mile route on Sunday? C-rides can vary between 40-60 miles.
Maybe best to start with 8am Regents Park session (Saturday), start with the slowest group and see how it goes (get an idea of speed, I can't judge 'pretty slow', and build up from there. And sign up for the intro-ride in September for the group riding skills.

Dear @RobT You should be fine to join our rides, just mention you are new. Do sign up for the September intro one, as during this ride we put extra effort in group riding skills.
-
That must be really frustrating @ChrisFinch I luckily haven't experienced such knee problems but it sound like a bike fit is a very good start. A friend of mine had his knee problems solved by changing the angle of his cleats slightly, but it could be a number of things.
If you are thinking of going to a physio, some recommendations from club members can be found here:http://forum.islington.cc/conversations/258412/#comment11990923

Great you are considering joining @RobT The intro rides are once a month, but you can join laps Regents Park or Sunday rides before. What is your experience?
-
-
Dear Laura @user57027 , the next into ride will beginning of September and will be announced next week. You are welcome to join any rides (weekend/weekday) of our club before, just ask for a quick update from current members on signs etc.
We give 3 trial rides before asking to be member. What is your experience (distance speed group riding).
-
You are welcome to join the other rides as well (midweek or Saturday) @claire_j_b Great you got the spirit from RideLondon. I heard a lot of enthusiastic stories from club members.
We still encourage all members to do the intro even if they have done multiple rides with us before. The intro rides just pay a lot more attention on group riding skills (and also explain why we do things the way we do), while in normal rides you learn by watch.
-
@claire_j_b you can set notifications at the top right. The September one will be most likely 12 September but this will be confirmed after this one has taken place.
-
@Claire Yes, still do the intro ride even though you have done a few rides. The intro-ride goes much more thoroughly into group riding skills. Also keep an eye on the August one as often people drop out last minute.
-
You are welcome to join @Jon76 Routes vary every week, sometimes they are posted on the forum in advance, but often people propose a route on the spot. There will always be a ride, so just show up on time and ask for a quick intro on signs.
-
I Read to quickly @SteveKn But thanks for the encouragement and the explanation.

Great you want to join the club and pick up cycling on a more regular basis @user56836 !
The best thing to do is join the intro ride

It is full at the moment but often people drop out in the last days preceding the event so keep an eye on the forum. If that is not possible, take the next intro ride (beginning September will be announced after this one is finished). The first things is to increase your max distance on bike and fitness. How long is your normal commute? C-rides on Sunday are around 40-60 miles. Alternatively and/or if this distance is still a step too far, you can join the 8 am Regents Park session on Saturday morning, where you can stop whenever you are exhausted.
Group riding is something you have to learn but everyone will learn it quickly. It is about giving trust to your fellow riders by being predictable (signing potholes turns etc, no unexpected moves) and trusting your fellow riders (being close to the rider in front of you to save energy).
If you have other questions, just post them here (a lot of questions are also answered above)
-
@Antoine The Tuesday ride is 40 miles, and most of the time we have a faster and slower group. I can't judge what you have done in the previous years, but if you are comfortable with this distance you can join. @Sir_Shannonball best to ask about the Tuesday ride.

We do like to see all new members to do an intro ride to refresh/learn group riding skills
-
@antoine Yes that is possible. Do you have any group riding experience? What speed distance do you normally do? We encourage everone to do an intro ride (organized once a month) for good group riding skills but you can join a ride before.
-
you are welcome to join on Saturday @nicknumbernine We meet in front of the zoo entrance. Come a bit earlier to introduce yourself and ask a quick intro about signs.
-
@tlb Putative new members can just mingle with club-riders. We separate in groups based on speed depending on who shows up, so you and @lindsam should be fine. The start time is fixed and especially if your new I would suggest coming earlier to get some instruction about group signalling. Can you make it for a Saturday or Sunday ride as a start?
-
@mark_dearing Yes there is a C-ride this Sunday. These rides run the whole year, with a different route every week. Sometimes the route is post in advance on the forum, but this is not always the case. We leave (moving) at 8:30 Wittington Park, so be there 10 minutes before. No need to announce in advance.
@tlb I am not sure if you ask if you ask people to wait or want a different group? We leave at the pre-announced time (so 18:30 midweek and 8:00 Saturaday, 8:30 Sunday).
You are free to join. (But still join the intro ride for good group riding practice)
-
@Kate_H yes the September one will be put on the forum after this ride has finished.
However keep the date of the August one free, as often people have to give up there space in the last week before the ride so you can take their spot. We don't keep a reserve list, so it is who respond first has the spot but if you select 'following' on the top right of this thread you will get an email when something is posted on this thread.

@user56580 Chris The intro ride is a loop of 43 km. We adjust the speed to the speed of the group (the slowest man/woman), but normally the average speed would be around 20k/h (C-speed) (+- 2 km/h). So if you feel comfortable at that distance and speed you should be fine. Note that this is not a training ride, we don't aim to push people, we want to show good group riding skill. Very few people will have experience with group riding, so no need to worry about that.
@Jon76 and Chris I hope you will enjoy the ride.
Sorry for late reply, but yes this is/was possible
