Hybrid/flat bar?

  • Hello everyone,

I’ve just joined your forum and I’d like to try out group riding in the near future. My main sort of riding is touring mainly on mixed terrain. My current bike is a flatbar hybrid bike (Marin Fairfax SC4). It’s pretty light and nippy and I’m confident it would keep the pace of an intro ride or C group ride.

Would I be welcome to turn up with such a bike? I’d look to purchase a more dedicated road bike in the future if I decide club riding is for me.

    Cheers,

    Tim.

Yes, you'd certainly be welcome and I'm sure you'd be fine. Most people ride on drop handlebar bikes for club rides but there's no rule to this effect and it will just mean that you have to work a bit harder. Hybrids aren't necessarily heavier than similarly priced road bikes, so its only the more upright riding position and consequent increased air resistance that well hold you back.

  • Hi Stephen,

That’s great to hear - thanks. I’ll keep an eye out for the next session and hopefully meet you all soon!

  • They are already announced https://forum.islington.cc/microcosms/1305/ but the one a week tomorrow is fully booked. People often drop out at the last moment so worth keeping an eye out if you free

  • Excellent. I've booked myself in for May (but I'll keep an eye on the April one just in case..)

    Cheers.
